THE EFFECT OF BANKING CONSOLIDATION ON PROFITABILITY AND SURVIVAL OF NIGERIA BANKS (A CASE STUDY OF UNITED BANK OF AFRICA, UBA IKEJA LAGOS)

ABSTRACT

 The relevance of helping an eagle eye on the effects on bank consolidation in Nigeria gaining momentum and keeping with other development in recent times as bank and other financial institution play vibrant role in the growth and development of any economy has their impacts can never be over-emphasized, especially in developing economy like Nigeria. This study aim at examine the effect of banking consolidation on profitability and survival of Nigeria bank using UBA Ikeja as case study. Also it evaluates the prospect and benefit accrued from consolidation of banks. The study employed descriptive research design data collected from both primary and secondary sources through the use of oral interview and observation method of data collection instruments. T-test was used to test wither there significant relationship between bank consolidation in profitability and survival or not. The study reveals that consolidation has significant effects on profitability and survival of banks in Nigeria. And it recommendation was made that banking industry should conform with national objective band identify fully with Nigeria aspiration by taking a more active part in the financing of economy programmes of national priority.
